Noctilucent Clouds Over Zhangjiajie Surreal Twilight

by Lucy McIntyre

Iridescent ribbons of electric blue and silver hover above the jagged quartzite pillars of Zhangjiajie, glowing against a deep indigo sky. A beam of artificial light sweeps across the peaks, highlighting the sharp edges of the rock formations. The left side of the panorama is blanketed in falling snow, coating the dark forest floor and the lower slopes in a thick, white layer. In stark opposition, the right side basks in bright, golden sunshine that warms the stone surfaces and casts long, crisp shadows. Low-hanging mist rests on the valley floor, separating the frozen half from the sunlit half. The impossible boundary runs vertically through the center, where snowflakes drift down one side while sunlight illuminates the other. One snowflake rests on a sun-warmed rock edge, marking the divide.
