Folded Rock Strata Silhouetted in Late Afternoon Light in from a ridge above layered foothills near Charallave

Folded Rock Strata Silhouetted in Late Afternoon Light

by Zachary Roth

Hard coastal glare defines the edge of a road cutting where ancient rock layers fold into sharp, dark ridges. The strata stand silhouetted against the bright, washed-out sky, their jagged edges cutting a deep black line across the horizon. Below the ridge, wet green foothills stretch toward the distance, their surfaces glistening with recent rain. Low-hanging clouds drift just above the valley floor, softening the transition between the stone and the sky. The exposed earth reveals a chaotic geometry of sediment, stacked in tight, undulating bands that emphasize the weight of the geology. One shadow falls across the lower slope, at the base of the massive formation in the wet, verdant landscape.
