Dappled Light on Forest Stream Under Thunderheads in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads in Kyushu

Dappled Light on Forest Stream Under Thunderheads

by Nancy Bartlett

Bright noon sunlight fractures across the surface of a shallow stream, creating shifting patches of white and gold against dark, wet stones. Late autumn leaves in rust and ochre line the banks, some floating motionless in the current. Above the water, a horizon of stacked thunderheads rises in heavy, layered columns, their bases deep charcoal while their tops remain brilliantly illuminated by the flat, overhead glare. The sky between the clouds is a stark, perfectly clear blue. Diagonal ripples in the water cut across the frame, drawing the eye from the shadowed foreground toward the massive cloud formation in the distance. The light reflects sharply off a smooth, submerged rock, defining the water's depth against the dark earth.
