Aerial View of Arctic Sea Ice Pressure Ridges

by Jude Talley

Thick mist obscures the horizon, leaving only the jagged texture of Arctic sea ice visible below. Massive pressure ridges rise like frozen waves, their surfaces rough and weathered in shades of slate grey and bruised white. The ice stretches endlessly, fractured into a chaotic mosaic of blocks and slabs that catch the harsh tropical bright light. Despite the warm illumination, the scene remains a frozen landscape where deep crevices cast sharp, dark shadows against the pale ridges. The sheer scale dwarfs any human element, showing the raw power of the frozen ocean. At the edge of the frame, a thin sliver of surf-scalloped coastline near Sapporo hints at the distant land, barely visible through the swirling grey vapor.
