Parrotfish Grazing on Volcanic Reef Belize in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Belize City

Parrotfish Grazing on Volcanic Reef Belize

by Edwin Landers

Golden light falls through exceptionally clear water to illuminate a parrotfish moving slowly across a jagged volcanic reef overhang near Belize City. The fish displays mottled green and pink scales that shimmer against the dark, porous rock formations. Fine sand particles drift in the suspended current, catching the last rays of the sun before nightfall. Surface ripples create a gentle, rhythmic distortion above the reef structure. The parrotfish uses its beak-like teeth to scrape algae from the rough stone, leaving a trail of fine sediment. Shadows stretch long across the crevices of the volcanic rock, deepening the contrast between the bright water and the shadowed underbelly of the overhang. One grain of coral dust settles on a rough ridge in the foreground.
