Jawfish Incubating Eggs in Winter Blue Hour in above a seagrass meadow near Ribeira, Porto

Jawfish Incubating Eggs in Winter Blue Hour

by June Vang

Deep indigo water fills the frame, illuminated by the soft, distant glow of Ribeira, Porto, on the horizon. A jawfish hovers just above a dense seagrass meadow, its mouth slightly distended to hold a cluster of pale, translucent eggs. The water is exceptionally clear, revealing fine sand grains and individual blades of winter seagrass swaying gently. Layers of depth recede from the fish into the murky distance where the town lights blur into horizontal streaks. The fish's scales reflect a cool, metallic sheen against the dark blue surroundings. A subtle ripple distorts the light from the distant shore as it falls across the sandy bottom.
