Soft late-afternoon light falls through the water, illuminating a gulper eel seen from behind as it stretches its massive, distended jaw. The creature floats along a kelp-fringed shelf near Paddington, Sydney, where early winter currents hold suspended particles that glitter like scattered diamond dust. Dark green kelp fronds sway gently in the background, their surfaces slick with moisture. The water displays a deep, otherworldly blue stillness, creating a stark contrast against the pale, translucent flesh of the eel. Tiny air bubbles rest on the kelp stems, catching the filtered light. One shadow falls across the eel's lower body, defining the curve of its distended mouth against the dark water column.
