Freediver Photographing Whale Shark from Below

by Sue Mercado

Clear tropical water near Miramar, Havana, glows with a deep, otherworldly blue under the early afternoon sun. From behind, a freediver in a dark wetsuit holds a camera, looking upward toward a massive whale shark. Sunlight fractures into dancing caustic patterns across the diver's back and the shark's speckled skin. The water remains exceptionally still, with only slow ripples disturbing the surface far above. Fine particles drift gently in the current, catching the light in a shimmering haze. The shark's broad, pale underbelly dominates the upper frame, against the diver's compact silhouette below. One beam of light pierces the blue, illuminating the texture of the shark's dermal denticles.
