Hexagonal Basalt Columns Above Cambodian Dunes

by Titus McLean

Geometric hexagonal basalt columns stretch across the frame in a precise, repeating grid visible from a high aerial perspective. Below, dry wadis and sand dunes of Cambodia fade into thick mist during twilight. Reflected light from nearby water surfaces creates a soft, silvery sheen that highlights the dark stone textures. The rainy season moisture adds a deep saturation to the earth tones, against the pale, hazy sky. Mist rests on the lower valleys, obscuring the boundary between land and air. Sharp edges of the rock formations stand out against the blurred, fluid background of the dunes. A small ripple on the water surface near the column edge catches the last light.
