Flash Flood Carves Canyon Along Tunisian Shoreline

by Alan Shepard

Misty dawn light falls through heavy gray clouds, illuminating a sudden torrent of water slicing through pale limestone along the Tunisian coast. The floodwater, dark and turbulent, cuts a sharp, narrow channel into the pale, layered rock face of the wave-cut cliff. Fine mist rises from the churning surface, softening the edges where the water meets the stone. In the foreground, wet, smooth boulders sit scattered across the damp sand, their surfaces glistening under the cool, diffused glow. Layers of the canyon recede into the distance, showing deep, geologic grandeur. at the edge is the white foam clinging to the jagged edge of a submerged rock, marking the violent force of the water against the ancient stone.
