Floodgate Chamber Algae Walls Blue Hour in along a dam spillway in Gusau

Floodgate Chamber Algae Walls Blue Hour

by Gwendolyn Saunders

Pale blue twilight washes the massive concrete walls of the floodgate chamber, where streaks of green and ochre algae rest on the damp surfaces. Low ground fog pools along the floor, softening the base of the structure while the dry season air remains still. Beyond the open spillway, a distant town glows with warm amber lights on the horizon, against the cool shadows inside. The concrete texture appears rough and weathered, marked by years of water flow. A narrow beam of residual light cuts across the wet pavement, highlighting the uneven ridges and the deep crevices where the algae has taken root. The fog drifts slowly against the darkening silhouette of the dam walls.
