Upward Rain Streaks Glass Furnace Monsoon

by Joann Michael

White-hot glass melts inside a massive industrial furnace door set into a heavy steel welding bay wall. The intense light bleaches the surrounding metal surfaces and casts sharp shadows on the concrete floor. Outside the bay, dramatic monsoon clouds swirl overhead in a high-altitude afternoon sky. Instead of falling, silver rain streaks move vertically upward, piercing the air in crisp, parallel lines. These impossible water threads reflect the furnace glow as they ascend past the building's corrugated roof edge. The contrast between the burning interior and the cold, ascending rain creates a heavy, monumental presence in the utilitarian space. Dust motes hang suspended near the furnace threshold.
