Green Flash Sunset Over Mexico Cloud Bands

by Faith Kaufman

A thin emerald sliver of light pierces the horizon where the sun dips below the curve of the earth. Above this fleeting green flash, fast-moving cloud bands stretch horizontally across the sky in shades of charcoal and soft lavender. The dry season air creates a shimmering heat haze that blurs the distant landscape below, turning the terrain into a wash of ochre and muted greens. From a high vantage point looking down, the clouds appear layered like fabric, their undersides catching the last warm glow of daylight. The green light sits precisely at the boundary between the darkening sky and the brightening horizon, a momentary spark against the vast, fading day. Below the clouds, the ground remains indistinct, lost in the shimmering distortion of the rising heat.
