Green Flash Above Stacked Thunderheads at Sunset

by Jenny Grimes

A razor-thin line of emerald light cuts the horizon just above a massive wall of thunderheads near Haiphong. The sky transitions from deep charcoal gray to soft violet as the sun dips below the cloud layer. Heavy overcast dominates the frame, yet a precise moment of atmospheric refraction creates a fleeting green spark against the darkening storm. The clouds stack in dense, rolling tiers, their bases shadowed in indigo while their tops catch the last warm glow of the day. Below the horizon, the sea surface reflects the dimming light, appearing almost black. The green flash sits perfectly centered, a sharp geometric anomaly in the otherwise organic chaos of the storm clouds. A faint halo of pale blue wraps around the emerald sliver before fading into the gloom.
