Noctilucent Clouds Above Tijuana Thunderheads at Winter Sunset

by Ann Bernard

Pale blue threads of noctilucent clouds glow faintly above a massive wall of dark thunderheads stretching across the northern horizon near Tijuana. The sky transitions from deep indigo at the zenith to a sharp band of orange low-angle light where the sun has just dipped below the horizon. Heavy storm clouds stack vertically, their undersides shadowed in charcoal gray, against the delicate, electric-blue wisps floating miles higher in the mesosphere. Dry leaves skitter across the foreground pavement, caught in sudden gusts that ripple the air without obscuring the view. The vast distance separates the turbulent storm below from the serene, high-altitude ice crystals above. One leaf rests on the wet asphalt, reflecting the orange glow of the fading sun.
