Green Flash Sunset Near Girga

by Landon Cobb

A razor-thin emerald line cuts across the dying sun at the horizon near Girga. Late summer clouds gather in heavy, bruised grays above the flat, arid landscape. Rain falls in distinct vertical streaks, catching the fading light as a brief sun shower. The ground below is dry, cracked earth with sparse, withered vegetation. A silhouette of a lone, leafless tree stands against the bright, wrapping horizon light, its branches stark and jagged. The green flash flickers for a split second before vanishing into the orange glow. The edge of the tree casts a sharp, dark shadow across the parched soil, at the base of the moment in the raw, gritty reality of the desert edge.
