Iridescent Cloud Fragment Shimmering at Hawaii Sunrise in beneath fast-moving cloud bands in Hawaii

Iridescent Cloud Fragment Shimmering at Hawaii Sunrise

by Sterling Robinson

First light cuts through humid air after rain, illuminating a small, isolated cloud fragment floating near the sun. The fragment glows with shifting bands of violet, teal, and gold, created by sunlight refracting through suspended water droplets. Below, fast-moving cloud bands stretch horizontally across the sky, their undersides dark and heavy against the brightening horizon. The light is soft yet directional, casting long, faint shadows on the distant ocean surface. Tiny droplets rest on the edges of the smaller cloud, catching the sun in sharp, glittering points. The horizon line separates the deep blue water from the pale, luminous sky, showing the scale of the atmospheric phenomenon. A thin layer of mist hovers just above the waves, blurring the boundary between sea and sky.
