Frost Covered Cabbages Between Vineyard Trellises

by Ana Hess

Silver frost coats the broad, waxy leaves of a cabbage row running straight between weathered wooden vineyard posts. Deep shadows dominate the foreground where the overcast sky blocks direct sun, yet a sharp rim of pale light edges the top of the nearest cabbage head. The dry season air has left the ground beneath the plants hard and cracked, against the soft, crystalline texture of the frost. Wooden trellis wires stretch horizontally across the frame, creating strong leading lines that pull the view toward the misty horizon. The cabbages sit low and heavy, their green undersides barely visible beneath the white rime. One droplet of melted water rests on the edge of a lower leaf, reflecting the gray sky above.
