Folded Rock Strata in Canadian Road Cutting at Sunset
by Caleb Waters
Layers of sedimentary rock rise steeply from the asphalt edge, folded into tight rhythmic arches spanning the frame. Early summer greenery rests on the top ridge against the exposed stone below. The setting sun casts long warm shadows that carve deep relief into the gray and ochre bands of the cliff face. A perfectly clear blue sky stretches overhead, devoid of clouds, while the horizon glows with fading orange light. Dust hangs motionless in the air, illuminated by the low angle of the sun. The texture of the rock appears rough and weathered, with sharp edges where erosion has stripped away softer material. One crack runs vertically through the center of the formation, splitting the folded layers apart.
