Twilight Rock Strata Minatitlán Monsoon

by Lena Olson

Deep horizontal bands of folded sedimentary rock rise sharply from the asphalt edge of a road cutting near Minatitlán. The strata form a jagged, layered wall, their dark grey surfaces slick with recent monsoon rain. Above, the sky transitions from heavy slate to a soft, fading violet as the storm clears. In the distance, a horizontal band of warm orange and yellow light marks the glow of the town on the horizon, illuminating the upper edges of the stone. The wet rock reflects this distant glow, creating a subtle sheen on the rough, jagged textures. One dark shadow from the cut slopes down toward the wet pavement.
