Folded Rock Strata in Rift Valley Road Cutting in from a ridge above layered foothills in the Rift Valley

Folded Rock Strata in Rift Valley Road Cutting

by Jamie Molina

Wet stone layers curve sharply against the gray sky in a road cutting exposed on the Rift Valley ridge. Water beads on the rough, sedimentary surface, highlighting bands of rust-red, charcoal, and pale beige that twist into tight arches. The overcast noon light flattens shadows, turning the cliff face into a solid wall of texture. Puddles gather in the shallow depressions between the rock folds, reflecting the dull white of the rainy sky. Sparse, dark green vegetation rests on the upper edge where the road meets the ridge. The wet stone glistens, showing the grain of the rock beneath the steady rain. One drop slides down the vertical face, tracing a dark line through the red sediment.
