Swirling Sandstone Layers in Valley Light in across a wide valley floor in Piedmont

Swirling Sandstone Layers in Valley Light

by Kate Merritt

Midday sun reflects off a shallow water surface covering a wide valley floor in Piedmont, illuminating a massive sandstone formation rising from the mist. The rock displays tight, swirling strata in shades of ochre, rust, and pale beige, curving like frozen liquid stone. A thin veil of early summer fog softens the distant valley edges while the wet stone surface glistens under the bright overhead light. Deep shadows nestle in the tightest curves of the geological folds, showing the three-dimensional depth of the swirling patterns. The water's surface creates a mirror that doubles the vibrant colors of the rock face. At the very edge of the frame, a small ripple distorts the reflection of the highest ridge.
