Flying Fish Gliding Over Kelp Shelf Before Dawn in along a kelp-fringed shelf near Busan

Flying Fish Gliding Over Kelp Shelf Before Dawn

by Tim Chan

Misty dawn light softens the horizon where the Busan coastline meets the sea. Silver bodies of flying fish arc just above the water, their fins spread wide against the cool, pre-sunrise air. Thick kelp fronds hang vertically from the submerged shelf, swaying in slow, deliberate ripples that barely disturb the glassy surface. The water holds an exceptional clarity, revealing the texture of the kelp stems and the faint scale patterns on the fish. A shallow depth of field blurs the distant kelp forest while keeping the leading fish sharp. One droplet rests on the trailing edge of the nearest wing-like fin, catching the pale gray glow of the morning.
