Sunfish Staircase in Florida Kelp in through a forest of kelp fronds in Florida

Sunfish Staircase in Florida Kelp

by Esther Mitchell

Orange sunset light falls through a dense forest of kelp fronds in Florida waters, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like scattered gold dust. A massive ocean sunfish hovers near the surface, its textured gray skin catching the low-angle glow. Beneath the fish, a impossible stone staircase emerges from the water column, its landing splitting into two flights that extend simultaneously upward into the kelp canopy and downward into the dark depths. The stairs are sharply defined against the swaying green fronds, their gray stone surfaces against the fluid motion of the water. Tiny air bubbles rest on the kelp stems, while the sunfish remains perfectly still, suspended above the contradictory geometry of the steps. The water's clarity reveals the precise intersection of the stairs with the kelp roots.
