Flamingos Feeding in Tidal Lagoon Near Mekelle in above a glacial stream near Mekelle

Flamingos Feeding in Tidal Lagoon Near Mekelle

by Adriana Williams

Cold silver dawn light washes over a shallow tidal lagoon formed above a glacial stream near Mekelle. Rain falls steadily, creating concentric ripples that distort the reflection of pink plumage on the water's surface. A flock of flamingos stands knee-deep in the murky water, their long necks curved as they filter feed. The dry season leaves the surrounding banks bare and dusty, against the wet, rippled lagoon. Steam rises faintly where the cold rain meets the warmer stream water. Each bird's reflection breaks apart under the impact of individual raindrops. One droplet rests on the tip of a curved beak.
