King Penguin Colony Chicks Rain in beside a tidal inlet near Bologna

King Penguin Colony Chicks Rain

by Josiah Chambers

Brown down feathers of king penguin chicks cluster tightly along the muddy edge of a tidal inlet. Late afternoon light falls through a steady, gray rain, turning the water surface into a sheet of rippling silver. The birds stand low to the ground, their orange beaks and black backs distinct against the wet, churned earth. Raindrops splash up from the inlet, blurring the background where distant, dry mountains rise in hazy blue-gray layers. A large adult penguin remains perfectly still beside the group, its dark plumage slick with water, watching the waterline with unwavering focus. The foreground mud reflects the dull sky, at the base of the colony in the cold, early spring air.
