Giant Flamingo Wades Past Falconer in at the edge of a reed bed near Jalapa

Giant Flamingo Wades Past Falconer

by Kristen Acevedo

Bright midmorning light falls through wet leaves, casting dappled shadows across a stubble field near the Jalapa reed bed. A falconer walks forward, a hawk perched on their fist, moving past a surreal anomaly: a flamingo standing as tall as a giraffe. The massive bird wades through shallow water at the field's edge, its pink feathers vivid against the green reeds. Raindrops hang suspended in the air from a brief sun shower, glistening on the stubble and the falconer's cloak. The giant flamingo's long legs create ripples in the mud that match the scale of the nearby reeds. one drop of rain slides down the bird's beak, catching the light.
