Painted Storks Nesting Over Glacial Stream at Ramadi

by Danielle Norris

Vibrant orange and pink plumage of a painted stork colony glows against the deepening twilight sky above a fast-moving glacial stream near Ramadi. The birds cluster tightly on rough, stick-built nests woven into the tops of sparse, leafless winter trees. Low-angle sunlight cuts across the water, turning the churning white foam into streaks of molten gold. Heavy, dramatic clouds stack in layers of slate and charcoal, their undersides catching the last fire of the setting sun. The texture of the wet branches contrasts with the smooth, glossy feathers of the storks. In the foreground, a single bird stretches its long, black-tipped wings, casting a sharp, dark shadow onto the icy surface of the stream below.
