Fading Blue Light Over Belize Reef Ledge

by Jo Wood

Dim blue water envelops a rugged limestone reef ledge, its rough, pitted surface textured with encrusting sponges and coral growth. The water glows with a faint, diffused light filtering down from the surface, creating a soft, hazy depth. Tiny particles of plankton drift through the column, blurring the distant horizon into a pale, indistinct wash. The ledge angles sharply downward, casting subtle shadows into the crevices where the light fails to reach. Color shifts from a brighter azure near the top to a deep, muted indigo in the lower recesses. A cluster of fan coral fans out from a rock, its delicate branches stark against the darkening background. at the edge is the way the fading surface glow creates a thin, luminous rim along the upper edge of the stone.
