Bioluminescent Waves Breaking on Reef Flat at Blue Hour in beside a reef crevice under clear water near Cairns

Bioluminescent Waves Breaking on Reef Flat at Blue Hour

by Thomas Roth

Dim blue light falls through clear water above a shallow reef flat near Cairns during the dry season. Tiny waves crest against a coral crevice, their edges glowing with bright turquoise bioluminescence. Thousands of suspended particles glitter within the water column, catching the fading surface glow. The textured coral surface below appears dark against the luminous foam. A low angle view places the perspective just above the seabed, looking up at the breaking water. The glowing water acts as the primary light source against the deepening underwater twilight. A bright spark of light rests on the edge of a breaking wave crest.
