Horsefly Compound Eye Macro Detail in on lichen-covered bark in Haiphong

Horsefly Compound Eye Macro Detail

by Ricky Booth

Soft overcast light fills the indoor space, illuminating dust motes drifting in faint shafts. An extreme close-up reveals the intricate geometry of a horsefly's compound eye resting against rough, lichen-covered bark. The hexagonal facets shine with jewel-like precision, displaying gradients of amber, deep green, and charcoal gray. Fine, translucent hairs fringe the edge of the eye, against the smooth, glossy surface of the ommatidia. The bark beneath shows patches of pale green and gray lichen, their texture soft and powdery against the hard, polished look of the insect's head. One facet catches the diffuse light, creating a tiny, sharp highlight on the dark surface.
