Diving Beetle Hunting Underwater in Catalan Waters

Bright open daylight falls through the surface, illuminating a diving beetle suspended in the shallow waters of a Catalan pond. The insect's dark, streamlined body contrasts against the pale, sandy bottom scattered with small pebbles and decaying leaves. Fine plankton haze softens the background, blurring distant reeds into vague vertical shapes. Sunlight fractures into dancing beams that catch the beetle's wet, iridescent shell and its folded legs poised for a strike. Tiny air bubbles rest on the hydrophobic hairs on its back, marking its recent dive. The water remains still, preserving the sharp edges of the beetle's mandibles against the diffused light. One cluster of green algae rests on a submerged stone in the immediate foreground.
