Wildflowers in Ruins at Dawn Near Eldoret

by Beatrice Hughes

First light breaks through thick mist to illuminate weathered stone columns lying horizontally among tall nettles. Vibrant wildflowers burst from deep cracks in the gray masonry, their petals catching the pale orange glow of nautical dawn. Layers of broken masonry recede into the distance, fading into the white haze that rests on the wet ground. The stone surfaces appear rough and eroded, against the delicate, translucent quality of the fresh blooms. Water droplets rest on the lower leaves of the nettles, reflecting the soft, diffused sky above. The scene is quiet, with the mist softening the edges of the distant ruins.
