Crown-of-thorns starfish feeding on tropical reef coral

by George Hensley

Soft, diffused afternoon light falls through the monsoon haze, casting a pale turquoise glow over the underwater reef ledge near Cairns. A massive crown-of-thorns starfish anchors itself against the rough, calcified surface of branching coral, its numerous spiny arms spreading outward in a radial pattern. The water carries a suspended plankton haze that softens the background details, creating layers of depth where distant coral formations fade into the blue-grey distance. The starfish's skin texture appears rough and segmented, against the smoother, weathered surfaces of the reef below. Fine sediment particles drift slowly in the current, catching the faint light as they move across the scene. The upper edge of the frame reveals the underside of the reef overhang, framing the feeding activity within the sheltered space.
