White Coral Fungus Under Predawn Starlight in along a coral wall with blue water beyond near Cairns

White Coral Fungus Under Predawn Starlight

by Veronica Roy

Pale, branching fingers of a coral fungus rise from a textured reef wall, their white tips catching the faint glow of starlight. The surrounding water holds a deep, exceptionally clear blue, rippling slowly across the surface above the subject. Shadows soften the crevices of the coral structure while the fungus stands in sharp relief against the dark background. The turn of seasons leaves the water still and cool, with no movement in the immediate vicinity of the organism. Tiny suspended particles drift lazily in the current, illuminated by the dim ambient light. at the edge reveals the rough, porous texture of the base where the white branches meet the dark stone of the wall.
