Crown of Thorns Starfish Feeding on Coral at Night in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Zanzibar

Crown of Thorns Starfish Feeding on Coral at Night

by Dwight Frank

Sweeping beams of white light cut through the dark water, illuminating a crown-of-thorns starfish anchored to a rough coral head beneath a reef ledge. The starfish displays a ring of long, sharp spines in muted orange and deep brown, its central disk pressed against the textured surface of the coral. Fine sediment and plankton float in the water column, catching the light to create a field of glittering points. The water is clear yet filled with suspended particles that drift slowly around the creature. Shadows stretch deep into the crevices of the reef structure behind the starfish. A cluster of small anemones rests on the rock face just beyond the starfish's outstretched arms.
