Christmas Tree Worms on Coral in Tropical Shallows in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Stone Town

Christmas Tree Worms on Coral in Tropical Shallows

by Joel Roach

Soft, diffused sunlight falls through the water, illuminating a cluster of Christmas tree worms emerging from a porous coral head. The worms display feathery red and white plumes that fan out symmetrically against the muted orange and brown tones of the reef structure. A fine suspension of plankton creates a hazy veil, softening the background layers of the reef ledge and receding into a pale turquoise distance. The water remains still, allowing the delicate structures to float without distortion. Individual worm crowns stand upright, their fine filaments catching the faint light, while the coral surface beneath them shows rough, pitted textures. The scene settles into a quiet, suspended state where the plumes drift slightly, anchored by the solid rock against the soft, grainy water.
