Christmas Tree Worm Spiral on Reef Ledge Stone Town in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Stone Town

Christmas Tree Worm Spiral on Reef Ledge Stone Town

by Lily Gross

Deep shadow cloaks a coral head beneath a reef ledge, where a single Christmas tree worm extends its feathery crowns in a tight spiral. Sunlight breaks through the surface above, casting a sharp rim of pale blue light along the worm's white plumes while the surrounding water remains in cool obscurity. Fine plankton particles drift through the haze, softening the background into a gradient of murky teal. The coral surface displays rough, pitted textures in muted browns and grays, against the delicate, feathery rhythm of the worm's appendages. Tiny bubbles rest on the coral crevices, and the water's density creates clear suspended stillness. A faint shadow of the worm falls across the adjacent rock face, at the base of the creature in its hidden niche.
