Christmas Tree Worm Spiraling on Zanzibar Coral

by Esther Vaughan

Sunlight pierces the clear turquoise water just after sunrise, illuminating a vibrant Christmas tree worm coiled tightly around a porous coral head. The worm's feathery radioles display intricate bands of orange and white against the rough, calcified surface of the reef. Fine suspended particles glitter like dust in the low-angle beams, creating a shimmering haze that softens the background. A dark crevice lies immediately beside the coral structure, adding depth to the underwater landscape. The water remains still, holding the suspended light in a deep blue suspension. At the very edge of the frame, a single orange tip of the worm's plume rests against the pale coral ridge.
