Coral Encrusted Anchor Chain in Winter Night

Thick iron links of an anchor chain rest heavily against the dark sand beneath a reef ledge. Rough patches of coral encrust the metal, displaying soft pinks and muted oranges against the gray steel. Silvery winter light filters down from the surface, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like dust motes in the water column. The chain curves slightly as it settles into the cool season depths near Cairns. Tiny crustaceans rest on the crevices between links. A faint shadow stretches along the seabed where the chain meets the sand.
