Mantis Shrimp Strike Night Reef Cairns in along a coral wall with blue water beyond near Cairns

Mantis Shrimp Strike Night Reef Cairns

by Floyd Hendricks

Cold moonlight falls through the dark water column, illuminating a mantis shrimp emerging from a sandy burrow along a textured coral wall. The creature's raptorial appendages are mid-strike, frozen in a blur of motion against the stillness of the reef. Tiny suspended particles glitter like distant stars in the blue water beyond, caught in the beam of light. The coral surface displays rough, organic contours in shades of muted brown and grey, against the shrimp's vibrant, iridescent blue and green hues. Shallow depth of field blurs the distant reef wall, keeping focus sharp on the predator's extended limbs and the fine sand grains displaced by its sudden movement. One grain of sand rests on the edge of the burrow, marking the exact moment of disruption.
