Bridge Pier With Tide Lines and Mussels in beside a bridge pier above moving water in Kyrgyzstan

Bridge Pier With Tide Lines and Mussels

by Charlene West

Hard late-afternoon light cuts across a massive concrete bridge pier rising from moving water in Kyrgyzstan. Horizontal bands of dark mineral deposits mark high tide lines against the gray stone surface. Clusters of blue-gray mussels rest on the lower sections where the water laps. Above the wet zone, bare cables and industrial transformers hang from the structure. The air shimmers visibly around the electrical equipment in the dry mountain atmosphere. The wide panoramic view shows the structural monumentality of the bridge against the open river valley. Sharp, angular shadows fall across the pier's face, revealing every texture of the weathered concrete and the rough shells at the edge.
