Water Basin Under Gyeongju Bridge in under a cable-stayed bridge span in Gyeongju

Water Basin Under Gyeongju Bridge

by Jeff Walton

Hard coastal glare illuminates a vast rectangular water treatment basin beneath the sweeping concrete span of a cable-stayed bridge in Gyeongju. The water surface acts as a dark mirror, holding a sharp reflection of heavy industrial clouds drifting overhead. Concrete walls rise with civic-scale austerity, their gray surfaces textured by weathering and faint mineral stains. Steel cables stretch diagonally from the bridge tower, cutting a geometric pattern against the pale sky. The early summer sun casts deep, defined shadows across the basin floor, showing the massive scale of the infrastructure. Along the water's edge, a thin line of white foam marks the boundary where the still liquid meets the rough concrete.
