Basalt Plateau and Lava Ridge After Rain in across a floodplain after rain near Bishkek

Basalt Plateau and Lava Ridge After Rain

by Mario Merritt

Wet basalt slabs stretch across the foreground, their rough, vesicular surfaces glistening under a low sun. A jagged lava ridge rises sharply to the right, its dark, cooled rock against the soft, golden light filtering through heavy, low-hanging clouds. Beyond the plateau, a flat floodplain reflects the sky, turning the wet ground into a vast, shimmering mirror. The early summer light casts long, soft shadows that emphasize the uneven texture of the stone. Puddles scattered across the rock face catch the warm glow, creating small, bright pools against the deep grey and black of the volcanic material. The horizon blends seamlessly with the water, erasing the boundary between earth and sky in a quiet, weather-shaped stillness.
