Monsoon Fjord Shoreline Morning Reflections in along a wave-cut shoreline near Arua

Monsoon Fjord Shoreline Morning Reflections

by Emily Witt

Steep, dark rock walls rise vertically from a calm, wave-cut shoreline, their surfaces slick with monsoon moisture. Just after sunrise, thin bands of golden light pierce through heavy, slate-gray clouds, illuminating the upper ridges while the water below remains in deep shadow. The stillness of the bay creates a perfect mirror, duplicating the jagged cliffs and the heavy sky in the glassy surface. Moss rests on the lower rock faces where the tide reaches, against the bare, wet stone above. A small ripple near the edge breaks the symmetry, revealing the texture of the shallow water before it smooths out again. at the edge is the sharp, vertical line where the rock meets the water, dividing the earth from the inverted sky.
