Fossil Terraces Reflecting Drizzle in Japanese Foothills in from a ridge above layered foothills in Japan

Fossil Terraces Reflecting Drizzle in Japanese Foothills

by Hana Valdez

Wet, dark stone layers of a raised beach terrace stretch across the foreground, their surfaces slick with early spring rain. Tiny, pale fossils protrude from the grey rock, catching the bright tropical light despite the overcast sky. A shallow pool of water in a depression creates a perfect mirror, doubling the image of the layered foothills rising in the distance. Fine droplets of a light drizzle disturb the reflection, creating ripples that distort the view of the green slopes. The air hangs heavy with moisture, visible in the sheen coating every surface. At the edge of the frame, a single dark pebble rests against the wet rock, marking the boundary between the solid earth and the fluid mirror.
