Cuban Canal Lock Pond Under Blue Hour Rain
by Isabel Booth
Wet concrete walls rise steeply from a calm side pond, shielding the water from wind along a levee path in Cuba. The sky has deepened into a cool blue as city lights begin to glow in the distance, reflecting softly on the dark water surface. Fine rain creates tiny ripples across the pond, breaking the stillness of the stone structures. The concrete surfaces appear slick and dark, absorbing the ambient light while utility lamps cast pools of warm yellow illumination against the gray masonry. Heavy stone blocks form the base of the shelter, their rough texture against the smooth, rain-slicked water. one drop of water slides down a vertical joint, tracing a clear path through the grime before disappearing into the pond below.
