Mantis Shrimp Striking Reef Burrow Cairns in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Cairns

Mantis Shrimp Striking Reef Burrow Cairns

by Lewis Wood

Brilliant turquoise light fractures across the sandy floor beneath a jagged reef ledge. A mantis shrimp explodes from a narrow burrow, its clubbed appendage blurring with speed against the stillness of the shallow water. Golden caustic patterns dance over its armored exoskeleton, highlighting the mottled browns and electric blues of its carapace. Fine sediment swirls in the wake of the strike, catching the sun like suspended diamonds. Tiny organic particles float weightlessly in the clear column, drifting slowly around the creature's extended limbs. The sand grains shift under the impact, creating a small cloud of dust that settles instantly against the dark shadow of the overhang.
