Sun Bear Climbs Dipterocarp Near Linz Inlet

by Bryce Douglas

Wet bark of a massive dipterocarp trunk rises vertically, slick with rain and darkened to a deep umber. A sun bear grips the rough surface with claws, its fur matted and dripping against the gray afternoon sky. The animal pauses mid-climb, body tensed, head turned slightly toward the tidal inlet visible in the background. Water ripples across the inlet surface, reflecting the heavy cloud cover. Rain streaks the air, blurring the distant shoreline where reeds bend under the weight of the storm. Droplets rest on the bear's whiskers and the twisted knots of the tree bark. The scene holds a sharp, wet stillness before the next movement.
