Polar Bear Den Entrance Snowbank Moonlight in beside a tidal inlet near Fairbanks

Polar Bear Den Entrance Snowbank Moonlight

by Alexis Aguilar

A dark, tunnel-like opening cuts into a massive snowbank beside a tidal inlet near Fairbanks. Low-hanging clouds obscure the midnight sky, casting a flat, blue-grey glow across the scene. The snow surface around the den entrance shows rough, wind-sculpted textures and scattered ice crystals from the brief arctic summer. A faint track of disturbed powder leads toward the shadowed mouth of the burrow. The ground slopes gently down toward the dark water, where the inlet reflects the pale light. The entrance itself is framed by a rim of packed snow that contrasts with the softer drift behind it. A thin layer of frost rests on the lip of the hole.
